The Fourth Way System

THE FOURTH WAY SYSTEM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION

The last sacrifice anyone will ever surrender to the altar of reality is the lie that there is genuine meaning involved in the existence of this single life form as it is. Nature has devised the cruelest trick possible: it has wired a brain to believe that this one among millions, and now billions, is necessary and significant not only here on earth, but even beyond the grave. Since there is almost no material advantage in facing the truth each and every self-important walking-talking ego imagines that there is a special purpose set aside for him or her to be alive. The reality is that there is no more significance to your particular existence than there is significance in the single life of a particular ant in an anthill. The multitudes and their actions on the face of this world would continue just as well without you. Peasants in third world countries suddenly disappear in the tens of thousands every year, they are cut down at all ages and quickly rot back into dirt and the instinctive life of the third world does not diminish in the least. Here in the industrialized West where there is a bit more education and material investment in the average occupant the social organization reinforces the illusion that there is particular significance in your life and what you are doing with it. The fact is, and it is a fact that is demonstrated daily at all levels of society, you could die today and within weeks, certainly within months, the world would have moved along nearly as if you had never existed. In a year the emotions and operations of the people you now know would move along completely as if you never existed.

Certainly there are the famous and those that carry tremendous responsibility and they would create a significant stir if they were to suddenly die, but most of us are far from characters acting on the world scene. Even so, the truth is that each of us vaguely believes that the world would suffer greatly without us. The significance of this fact of life, that nature has built the illusion of self-significance into each creature in the form of an elaborate survival mechanism, is that you as you are, a man or woman with little or even no ability to generate self-consciousness in yourself to a significant degree (despite your eager and naïve imagination), exist in a fantasy world wherein you erroneously believe that what you do from day-to-day and how you feel about it is somehow meaningful and valuable. You believe that all your feelings and thoughts about what happens to you on a daily basis is actually adding up to a full and meaningful life, but this is in truth merely a pitifully self-serving hope that will in the end add up to nothing.

The central reason cults are so successful in lands where they are ignorantly liberal enough to allow them to flourish is because they build on, promote and protect the popular lie that you as one of the billons of faces gracing the world have somehow become more significant than most and that finally your life is important, more important that the average nobody who is obviously not making much of a difference. The cult member is told that he is making a tremendous difference by working for the only organization that has been selected to be significant. The problem with this hype is that soon there are hundreds, thousands and even tens of thousands of cults all claiming to be the only significant group of people. The simple truth is that none of them and almost no one is in the least significant except at the most sentimental level of emotional attachment to his or her closest relatives and friends and even then in most cases the relationships are so dysfunctional and self-serving that there is nothing honest about them. Here are the facts from the point of view of whether God is watching you and waiting for you to work your way up to his table: your cult is insane and therefore the opposite of significant and you personally have zero relationship to any God or Gods. The exciting omens are all lying to you because they are simply the result of pathological wishful thinking. The actual reason for your ultimate insignificance is that you do not have the capacity to in effect generate self-consciousness in yourself and even if you could generate self-consciousness to some degree you would nevertheless forget to do so except in extreme cases.

That’s right, what you are experiencing right now and in fact at all times is not actual consciousness. What you are experiencing right now and most of time is the faulty functioning of a very advanced nervous system that is designed by nature to be clever enough to operate in an insane world well enough to serve the purposes of a vast organic conspiracy to maintain the mechanism of the cosmic ecosystem wherein you are mercilessly used until you are used up and then disposed of in what amounts to a cosmic compost heap. Meanwhile you prattle on about the joys of consciousness and how satisfying it is to merge into the great collective pile of secretly blissful people, plants and animals. It’s all an illusionary self-encouraging fantasy. If there were any degree of self-consciousness in a particular human being then he or she would suddenly realize just how unlike everything and everyone else he or she is at that particular minute. In a state of significant self-consciousness the one thing that is certain is that you are suddenly in a separate dimension by yourself and that everyone and everything around you is visibly “unconscious.” That things and people are alive and that you can suddenly feel their aliveness does not empower them with consciousness.

This is the beginning of something significant, the realization that it is possible to separate out an independent sense of self-consciousness from everything and everyone else. These moments of self-consciousness only come about by remembering that you are usually an insignificant nothing sleepwalking in a state of auto-insanity. They only occur by making an effort to be aware of yourself devoid of the debilitating lie that somehow you are already something special. Real consciousness is exactly the opposite of the sensation of an involuntary merging into the collective unconsciousness. The sense of being a participating part of all the automatons that make the world around you go on with its ruthless business is sleep at its deepest level.

Being awake for significant periods without the elaborate lies that maintain the comfort and self-importance of the ego is what facilitates the gradual evolution of a human beast of burden into a separate ‘cosmos’ of self-consciousness that is entirely independent of the general cosmos of organic life. Rather than feeling ‘at one’ with the world, in a state of higher consciousness a man feels as if he has escaped from the world.
